Nato a York il 12 giugno 1858, Henry Scott Tuke proveniva da una famiglia quaker benestante. Suo padre, Daniel Hack Tuke, era un noto medico specializzato in psichiatria, e questo ambiente familiare influenzò profondamente la sua vita e la sua arte.
