      The Apprentice of Rotterdam

The year is 1784. A thirteen-year-old boy leaves the coastal town of Goedereede, traveling toward the bustling streets of Rotterdam. His father, Job Krijnse Bakker, a man of many roles including mayor and master cooper, has sent him to study under A.C. Hauck. This apprenticeship marks the beginning of a life defined by the precision of the brush and the demands of the portraitist.

In the studios of Rotterdam, the young Cornelis Bakker moves from student to a figure of significant standing within the Tekengenootschap. The momentum of his talent becomes undeniable in 1790. He wins an honorary prize for his ability to draw from a live male nude model. This achievement is more than a mere accolade; it grants him full membership to the society, allowing him to sit among the established members of the upper class. By 1798, he succeeds his father-in-law in a position at the Tekengenootschap, a role he maintains until 1835.

A Life of Precision and Portraiture

The economic climate of the early nineteenth century offers little stability. As the annexation by France brings hardship and unemployment to the region, the artist finds himself balancing the pursuit of fine art with the necessity of survival. He provides private drawing lessons to generate income, a practice that often encroaches upon his own creative time. His work settles into specific niches that require a steady hand and an eye for detail.

His technical focus shifts toward several distinct areas of production:

      • Miniature portraiture, a specialized craft learned from his father-in-law.
      • Genre paintings, focusing on the quietude of interior scenes.
      • Landscape drawings, specifically four views of Goedereede created in 1789 using pencil, black pen, and brush.
      • Double portraits of family members, including himself and his wife, Eva Hauck.

The family becomes a lineage of painters. His sons, Job Augustus and Aren, follow his footsteps into the profession. The domestic sphere and the professional sphere are inseparable, as seen in the portraits of his children, Franciscus and Aren, and Geertruida and Job.

      The Painted Self

A portrait in the Museum Rotterdam, often assumed to be a self-portrait, offers a glimpse into the artist's workspace. He is depicted with a thick shock of curly hair and a broad nose, seated before an easel. A wooden chair supports him, and a grey panel rests upon the easel. His right hand holds a paintbrush over the arm of the chair, while his left hand grips a palette. Nearby, books and painting implements lie scattered, and a plaster bust of a Torso of Belvedère stands in the background. This image captures the man behind the miniature, a professional navigating the intersection of art and necessity.
