アーティストの略歴

Ernst Oppler: A Pioneer of Berlin Impressionism

Ernst Oppler, born in Hanover in 1867, was the son of Edwin Oppler (1831–1880), a prominent German-Jewish architect. His family’s artistic heritage profoundly shaped his own creative path, fostering an environment where art and intellectual curiosity thrived. Alongside his brother Alexander Oppler (sculptor), Berthold Oppler (physician), and Siegmund Oppler (attorney), Ernst received a privileged education at the Academy of Arts in Munich under Nikolaus Gysis and Ludwig von Löfftz—influences that would indelibly mark his artistic vision. His early works demonstrated a naturalistic approach, reflecting the meticulous observation characteristic of academic training. However, Ernst swiftly embraced Impressionism’s revolutionary spirit, captivated by James Abbott McNeill Whistler's groundbreaking techniques. This fascination propelled him to London, where he honed his skills and absorbed the aesthetic principles of Whistlerian art. Membership in the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers solidified his position within the burgeoning artistic community of the era. A pivotal moment arrived in 1904 when Max Liebermann invited Ernst and Lovis Corinth to relocate to Berlin—a decision that would irrevocably alter their artistic trajectory. Joining the Berlin Secession, a group advocating for a bold new German Impressionist style, Oppler collaborated closely with Liebermann and Corinth, establishing studios in their villa Oppler in Grunewald and cultivating an intellectual milieu centered around artistic experimentation. The Secession’s ethos championed spontaneity and emotional expression—values that resonated deeply with Oppler's evolving aesthetic sensibilities. Oppler’s prolific output spanned diverse mediums, including painting, etching, and drawing. He achieved renown as a portraitist, capturing the essence of his subjects with remarkable sensitivity and detail. Furthermore, he meticulously documented daily life in Berlin through evocative cityscape scenes and genre paintings—works that offer invaluable glimpses into the social fabric of early 20th-century German culture. His artistic endeavors were recognized internationally; he was invited seven times to the Venice Biennale and participated six times, cementing his reputation as a leading figure in avant-garde art. Despite controversies surrounding Expressionism’s stylistic concerns, Oppler remained steadfastly committed to the Secession's ideals until 1912. Nevertheless, he continued to produce exceptional artwork—a testament to his unwavering dedication to artistic innovation and his enduring legacy as one of Berlin’s most celebrated Impressionist painters. The German state purchased several of his paintings, showcasing them in museums as emblematic of the burgeoning wave of modern art. Ernst Oppler's contribution to the visual arts is undeniable; he remains an artist whose work continues to inspire admiration for its beauty and artistic integrity.
