Born in Bucharest, Romania, Galya’s journey began with a deep fascination for storytelling – initially through literature and later evolving into visual mediums like photography and filmmaking. This passion fueled her pursuit of education, culminating in degrees from Veliko Tarnovo University specializing in National Security Law.
Her formative years were marked by engagement with social activism, particularly within the Romani community. Recognizing the importance of preserving Roma heritage and advocating for its recognition, Galya actively participated in initiatives aimed at fostering cultural understanding and empowering Roma women. This commitment instilled a lifelong dedication to amplifying marginalized voices.
Galya’s artistic endeavors centered around photography, where she skillfully documented the realities of Roma life – its traditions, challenges, and triumphs. Her work isn't merely aesthetic; it serves as a powerful tool for raising awareness about systemic inequalities and promoting social justice. Notably, her project “Made in EU” explored the complexities of navigating European citizenship while maintaining cultural identity.
Expanding her creative repertoire, Galya ventured into filmmaking, producing documentaries that delve into crucial themes like gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights within the Romani diaspora. Her film “Lesbian Echo” garnered critical acclaim for its sensitive portrayal of lesbian experiences in Romania.
Galya’s dedication to artistic expression and social advocacy earned her recognition as a rising talent in Romanian cinema. She was part of the winning presentation team campaigning for Plovdiv to be designated the European Capital of Culture in 2019, demonstrating her collaborative spirit and commitment to cultural enrichment.
Currently, Galya is focused on developing her filmmaking skills and continuing her advocacy work. Her upcoming project “Galya Stoyanova” aims to explore the intersection of art and social responsibility—a testament to her belief that creativity can catalyze positive change. She envisions a future where Roma voices are heard globally and where artistic endeavors contribute to fostering empathy and understanding.
Galya Stoyanova's work stands as a beacon of artistic integrity and social commitment—a celebration of Roma culture, identity, and the transformative power of storytelling.
