The Life and Artistic Journey of Andrée Ruellan
Born in Manhattan, United States, Andrée Ruellan was the daughter of French immigrants. Her early talent for realistic and fanciful drawings was nurtured by her parents, who were ardent socialists. Following the death of her father in an accident, Ruellan began selling her paintings, watercolors, and drawings to support herself and her mother. In 1920, she received a scholarship to study at the Art Students League, and two years later, she moved to Paris, where she remained for five years. During her time in France, she held her first solo exhibition at the Sacre du Printemps Gallerie and a second at the Weyhe Gallery in New York. While in Paris, she met and married the American artist John Taylor. The couple eventually settled in Shady, a village near Woodstock, New York.
Artistic Style and Notable Works
Ruellan's work as a painter, graphic artist, and lithographer often depicted everyday scenes in the American South and New York City. Her style evolved from social realism with modernist and abstract elements toward more abstract forms in her later years. She was known for her ability to convey warmth and empathy through her depictions of ordinary people at work and play. Her practice often involved preparing sketches in the field, developing them into intermediate forms like gouache on paper, and finally creating finished oil paintings on canvas. Her diverse body of work includes:
Her paintings and prints are held in various collections, including the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens.
