A Life of Art and Conflict
Born in Lyon, France, Antoine Dubost was a painter and lithographer who studied under François-André Vincent. After serving as a captain-adjoint in the engineering corps, he traveled through Switzerland and Italy before settling in Paris. His career was marked by significant recognition at the Salon, most notably in 1804 when he received a gold medal for his work The Sword of Damocles. This piece was highly regarded, with David offering praise for its combination of Italianate drawing and Flemish coloring.
Dubost's life was often defined by intense personal and professional disputes. In 1801, he engaged in a duel with the poet Joseph Despaze following a misunderstanding regarding a printed error. Later, during his time in England, he became embroiled in a public feud with collector Thomas Hope. This conflict escalated when Dubost exhibited Beauty and the Beast, a painting interpreted as a satire of Hope, leading to a legal dispute and a libel suit involving the Reverend John Beresford.
Later Years and Legacy
Following his time in England, Dubost returned to Paris in 1813. He held various roles, including serving as a captain of grenadiers for the 3rd battalion of the 1st legion of the National Guard. His artistic output continued with the lithography of his horse racing paintings from Newmarket, which he had previously exhibited at the Salon in 1814.
The artist's life came to a sudden end in 1825 following a public quarrel with an architect. After a duel was organized, Dubost was mortally wounded in the heart and passed away in Paris. His studio contents were subsequently sold at auction in 1826.
