The Life and Art of August Pezzey
Born in Innsbruck, Austria, August Pezzey was a painter who demonstrated an early artistic inclination. He attended the k.k. Staatsgewerbeschule, where his training was guided by professors such as Deininger, Josef Tapper, Heinrich Fuss, and Ruf. He later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Professor Otto Seitz. After studying with Franz von Defregger, Pezzey returned to Innsbruck following the death of his mother. There, he engaged in a rich artistic life, displaying his works in the shop windows of art dealers. His clientele included influential figures such as Archduke Eugen and Prince Hohenlohe, for whom he painted the interior of the Hofkirche. He also gained recognition as an illustrator, notably for his illustrations of the novel Frau Hitt by Franz Dolliner.
Artistic Style and Legacy
Pezzey was noted for his immense imagination and a rich, secure sense of color. His work often focused on fairy-tale scenes, historical themes, and portraits. His creative process was characterized by a rapid, almost urgent application of paint, driven by his vivid imagination, which sometimes resulted in unfinished sketches. While his use of color was highly regarded, some critics noted a certain uncertainty in his drawing, particularly regarding the treatment of figures and the nude. His short career was marked by a diverse output, ranging from mythological subjects to landscape studies. His life ended tragically in Innsbruck during the events known as the Fatti di Innsbruck, when he was killed by a bayonet thrust from a soldier.
