The lines of a life in Braunschweig

Bernhard Plockhorst began his training far from the finished canvases of his later years, starting with five years studying lithography at the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig. This early focus on printmaking left its mark on the precision found in his later figure paintings. He moved through the studios of Dresden and Munich, learning under Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Carl von Piloty, before reaching Paris to study with Thomas Couture in 1853. His hands learned the weight of color and the structure of form through these varied classrooms.

His travels took him across Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy, where he spent time observing the works of Rubens and Titian in the Old Pinakothek. These observations shaped a style rooted in academic German precision, often paired with a soft palette. Eventually, he settled in Berlin, though his years as a professor at the Grandducal Saxonian Art School in Weimar allowed him to pass these technical habits to students like Otto Piltz.

      Devotion in pigment and print

Much of his work focused on the quiet, heavy moments of biblical narratives. He had a way of rendering religious themes that felt accessible, often depicting Christ with a tender, direct presence. In The Good Shepherd, he painted a young figure in white and blue walking through a green landscape, a scene that reached many homes through mass-produced lithographs. His Guardian Angel, showing an angel guiding two children across a fragile bridge, became a familiar sight in many households and churches.

His subject matter often leaned toward the instructional and the protective:

      • The Resurrection of Christ, created as an altar painting for the cathedral of Marienburg.
      • The Battle of Archangel Michael with Satan, which resides in the Städtisches Museum in Cologne.
      • Jesus Blessing the Children, a work that captured the attention of the nineteenth-century Christian community.
      • Noli me tangere, a large oil painting originally intended for the German Court.

A legacy in homes and churches

While his name might not be the first mentioned in academic circles, his images found their way into the everyday spaces of life. His prints were often found in family Bibles or hung in nurseries, serving as visual reminders of faith. In the United States, his motifs appear in the stained glass of various churches, from the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Paul in Birmingham, Alabama, to the Stanford Memorial Church.

Even a moment of misfortune left a mark on his history. His painting Noli me tangere was aboard the ship Sorata when it struck rocks between Adelaide and Melbourne in 1880. The ship took on water, and the painting became encrusted with a white layer of dissolved plaster of Paris from its frame. It was eventually recovered and restored, proving that even after such an event, the work could be returned to the light. He died in Berlin in 1907, leaving behind a body of work that remains tied to the religious traditions of his time.
