The Life and Art of Catherine Wiley
Born in Rocky Top, United States, Catherine Wiley was an American painter who became a prominent figure in the Knoxville art circle. After studying at the Art Students League of New York, she received instruction from artists such as Lloyd Branson and Frank DuMond. Her time in New York exposed her to various movements, including the Ash Can School, the French Barbizon school, and the works of William Merritt Chase. In 1905, she returned to Knoxville to teach art at the University of Tennessee.
Wiley's work is often described as impressionist, characterized by vivid color and brushstroke. Her paintings frequently depict interiors and women, and her style drifted toward abstract impressionism later in her career. Her notable works have been displayed in institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Morris Museum of Art, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
