A Life of Military Illustration and Artistry
Charles Morel was a French painter, illustrator, and etcher born in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. A former cavalry captain serving under General Charles-Arthur Maitrot, he transitioned into the world of fine arts as a student of the painter Édouard Detaille. His artistic career was deeply intertwined with military themes; starting in 1887, he regularly presented military-inspired watercolors at the Salon des artistes français, eventually becoming a member of that society.
Morel gained significant recognition for his illustrations provided to various publishers and periodicals, including L'Univers illustré, Le Monde illustré, and L'Illustration, where he specialized in illustrated military reports. His diverse body of work included collaborations with publishers such as Armand Colin, Paul Ollendorff, and the Société des amis des livres. In his later years, he produced etchings, including works such as those for Napoléon homme de guerre in 1904.
