The Life and Training of Charles Saligo
Born in Geraardsbergen, Belgium, Charles Louis Saligo was the son of Adrien Louis Saligo and Jeanne Marie Van Huffel. After losing his mother before the age of two and his father at age nine, he pursued an artistic path under the guidance of his relative, the painter Pierre Van Huffel. His talent led him to Paris, where he received a scholarship from the City of Grammont to study at the École des Beaux-Arts. During his time in Paris, he became a student of Antoine Jean Gros. His early career was marked by participation in the Salon de Gand and the Salon de Paris, where he exhibited various works, including a portrait of a woman writing and a depiction of Briseis being returned to Achilles.
Artistic Career and Notable Works
Saligo's professional life was divided between his time in Paris and his later years in Belgium, specifically in Brussels, Lokeren, and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.
