The Quiet Presence of Diethelm Hofer
Born in 1945 in Karlstift, Austria, Diethelm Hofer has spent his life working with paint. His presence in the art world is marked by a steady, focused application of color and form. He does not seek to overwhelm the viewer, but rather to present a specific view of the world through his canvases. His work is a record of observation, captured through the medium of painting.
The brushstrokes in his work reflect a deliberate hand. There is a sense of stillness in his compositions, a quality that invites a closer look at the subject matter. He approaches the canvas with a sense of purpose, focusing on the essential elements of his chosen themes.
A Focus on Form and Subject
His practice is defined by a commitment to the act of painting itself. He works with a clarity that avoids unnecessary decoration, choosing instead to let the subject dictate the movement of the paint. His output is characterized by a specific set of interests and a focused technical approach.
In his catalog, certain themes and works emerge as central to his development:
- The 1971 work titled Pearl Boat.
- A continued focus on the nuances of light and shadow.
- The use of color to define space and depth.
