A Life of Art and Service
Born in Yeovil, United Kingdom, Elisabeth Chant was the daughter of a merchant captain and Elizabeth Rowe Wills. After her family immigrated to the United States, she settled in Hawley, Minnesota, and later Minneapolis. While she displayed an early talent for art, she initially pursued nursing, graduating from the Training School for Nurses at Northwestern Hospital for Women and Children in 1886. Her path took a dramatic turn during the Spanish–American War when she was transferred by the American Red Cross to work in Savannah and Augusta, Georgia.
Following her nursing service, she returned to Minneapolis and became active with the Handicraft Guild and the Minneapolis Art League. Her creative output during this period included murals, decorative paintings, pottery, and prints. A two-year journey to England beginning in 1901 allowed her to explore her family's connection to King Arthur, which influenced much of her work to focus on medieval legends.
Legacy in Wilmington
After traveling through China, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines, Chant settled in Wilmington, North Carolina. She became a pivotal figure in the local artistic community, establishing the Wilmington Art League and supporting the creation of the Wilmington Museum of Art. As an educator, she taught design, painting, and batik in her studio and at the museum, instructing several notable pupils.
Her artistic approach was informed by the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Pre-Raphaelites, and the work of William Morris. Chant remained in Wilmington until her death, and she is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
