The Painter of Sterile Rooms and Tin Soldiers

Aarhus, 1935. The arrival of Erling Gregers Kristensen marks the beginning of a life defined by the tension between the soft and the hard. Trained as a decorator at Salling in 1953, his hands first learned the precision of craft before they ever sought the abstraction of fine art. He moves through the halls of Svend Engelunds malerskole, absorbing the technical foundations that would later allow him to manipulate texture with such deliberate intent.

His early canvases present a world of pastose landscape abstractions. These are not mere depictions of nature but thick, tactile explorations of form. As his vision matures, a new, stranger reality emerges: a fantastic naturalism. In this phase, the viewer encounters soft, vulnerable objects—bundles of cloth held together by buttons and ties—placed within the cold, sterile environment of tiled rooms. These compositions, often bearing titles like Opstilling med tilknappet sorg, carry an ironic weight, blending the domestic with the unsettling.

      The Architect of Television Worlds

From 1969 to 1996, Gregers inhabits a dual existence. While his studio remains a place of quiet experimentation, his vision expands into the broadcast studios of DR TV Århus. He becomes a set designer, constructing entire universes for the screen. The air in these sets is thick with atmosphere.

      He builds the worlds of:

      • The nostalgic streets of Jul i Gammelby
      • The heavy, historical halls of Jul på Slottet
      • The intense arenas of drama, opera, and ballet
      • The structured tension of debate and quiz programs

In these spaces, he creates alchemy. He crafts alchemist workshops, castle halls, and even dungeons, using his eye for detail to ground fantasy in a tangible reality. This period of set design runs parallel to his fine art, feeding the same hunger for constructed environments.

Metal, Rubber, and the Weight of Material

By 1968, the brush begins to share space with more industrial elements. Gregers turns toward sculpture, finding a language in the unexpected. He works with metal, rubber, glass, and even the humble tin from food cans. His process is one of transformation; he cuts and solders these scraps, turning refuse into constructed objects that occasionally pulse with a strange, living energy.

One particular work, David, captures this metamorphosis. The biblical hero is absent, leaving behind only a white soldier's cloak. Crafted from white tin and solder, the garment retains the dramatic folds of a heavy fabric, suggesting the powerful, unseen force of a stone or grenade throw. It is a study in contrast: the rigidity of metal mimicking the fluidity of cloth.

His career, spanning over five decades until 2016, leaves a physical imprint on Danish institutions. His paintings find homes in the Statens Museum for Kunst and the Ny Carlsbergfondet, while his presence is felt in the galleries of Aarhus and Charlottenborg. He remains an artist of the material, forever seeking the musicality between the defined graphic line and the dissolved edge.
