The Life and Artistic Evolution of Eugenio Gignous
Born in Milan, Italy, Eugenio Gignous was the son of a silk merchant from Lyon. His formal artistic training began in 1864 when he enrolled at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied landscape painting under Luigi Riccardi and Gaetano Fasanotti. During his early years, Gignous was influenced by the Scapigliatura movement, forming a close friendship with Tranquillo Cremona. His early work in the 1870s included portraits, but he soon shifted his focus exclusively to landscape painting. He became known for experimenting with en plein air techniques, capturing the views of the Lombard and Piedmontese countryside. Throughout his career, he exhibited his work at major national exhibitions and international events, including the 1873 Vienna World's Fair and the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris.
Landscape Mastery and Regional Focus
Gignous's mature period was marked by a naturalistic approach to landscape. In 1879, he traveled to paint on Lake Maggiore with Francesco Filippini and Filippo Carcano, a journey that established a thematic repertoire centered on the Verbano, Mottarone, and Val d’Ossola regions. He eventually settled in Stresa on Lake Maggiore in 1886, where he became a chief representative of the landscape school emerging in the 1890s. His travels also took him to Liguria and Venice, where he exhibited successfully. His works often captured the essence of these specific Italian landscapes, from the impressionistic views of the Lake Maggiore region to the peaks of Monte Rosa. He died in Stresa.
