The Life and Artistic Journey of Fritz Winter
Fritz Winter was a German painter of the postwar period, recognized for his abstract works in the Art Informel style. His early life included working in coal mines, but his travels through Belgium and the Netherlands sparked an interest in painting, particularly the work of Vincent van Gogh. This passion led him to the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he studied under masters such as Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Oskar Schlemmer. During this time, he formed connections with artists like Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Naum Gabo.
Following the establishment of the National Socialist regime in 1933, Winter resigned from his teaching position in Halle an der Saale. His work was later classified as degenerate by the Nazi government and banned from museums. During World War II, he served in the German army on the Eastern front. While a prisoner of war in Siberia, his companion Margarete Schreiber-Rüffer ensured his paintings were exhibited. Upon returning to Europe, he cofounded the group ZEN 49 and embraced abstraction.
Artistic Contributions and Legacy
Winter's work often functioned as a cycle, revisiting old forms while introducing new ones. He was a pioneer of abstraction in Europe and one of the first to produce serigraphs in Germany. His notable series, Triebkräfte der Erde, was executed in 1944. Throughout his career, he participated in major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and Documenta. In addition to his painting, he held professorships at the Landeskunstschule in Hamburg and the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Kassel.
