The Life and Career of Georg Nerlich
Georg Nerlich was a German painter, graphic artist, and educator. Born in Opole, Poland, he later lived in Dresden. His academic training began in 1912 at the Breslau Academy of Art and Applied Arts, where he studied under several instructors, including Hans Poelzig and Oskar Moll. Following his studies, he obtained his state examination as an art educator in 1917 and worked in Breslau, Kattowitz, and Opole.
His artistic practice involved traveling to various locations, including Italy, Southern France, Austria, the Alps, the Dolomites, the Curische Nehrung, and the Baltic Sea. His work was characterized by the use of expressive colors and cubist forms. During the period of National Socialism, some of his works were classified as "degenerate" and were confiscated in 1937. Despite this, he remained a member of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts and continued to exhibit. Much of his body of work was lost during the Second World War.
Teaching and Legacy
Nerlich held a significant role in art education, serving as a professor of painting and graphics at the Technical University of Dresden from 1948 to 1957. His influence extended to his students, such as the stage designer Günther Petzold. Throughout his career, he was involved with various professional organizations, including the Künstlerbund Schlesien and the Verband Bildender Künstler. His works have been included in public collections, such as the National Gallery in Berlin and the Gemäldegalerie Neue Meister in Dresden.
