A Life in Landscape and Portraiture
Godfrey Frankenstein was a German-American landscape and portrait painter. Born in Darmstadt, Germany, he immigrated to the United States with his family in the early 1830s, settling in Cincinnati, Ohio. His artistic journey began with an apprenticeship as a sign painter, eventually leading him to establish his own business. He later took over an atelier in Cincinnati from his brother, John, where he became an established portraitist. In 1838, he co-founded the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Arts.
During the 1840s, his focus shifted toward landscape painting. He traveled extensively, capturing views of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, the Adams House in Quincy, Massachusetts, and the falls and bridges of the Ottawa River in Bytown. His most enduring passion was the Niagara Falls, a subject he returned to repeatedly, producing nearly 200 views of the falls from various perspectives and during different times of day and seasons.
Innovation and Legacy
Beyond traditional canvas painting, Frankenstein was involved in large-scale visual spectacles. In 1852, he worked with his brothers and Joseph Kyle to create the Moving Panorama of Niagara Falls. This massive, rolling cyclorama, measuring approximately 2.7 meters high and 305 meters long, featured around 80 scenes and was performed with music and spoken text. The work toured various American cities, including:
In his later years, he traveled through England, Wales, and the Alps before returning to work in Ohio and Kentucky. He died in Springfield, Ohio.
