A Life Between Science and Art
Heinrich Gans was a German painter and agronomist. Born in Ausleben, Germany, he was the son of a traditional large-scale farming family. He studied economics and agricultural science, eventually earning a doctorate from the University of Halle, where he served as a scientific assistant. Despite his scientific pursuits, Gans was a gifted artist who pursued art history in Munich after private studies in Hamburg and Berlin.
Between 1920 and 1930, he lived in Starnberg, creating impressionist paintings of motifs in Munich and at Lake Starnberg. His work was exhibited in several venues, including the Munich Secession, the Künstlerbund Die Bayern, and the Munich Artists' Association. His paintings were also frequently shown in the Glaspalast.
Artistic Evolution and Later Years
After his father's death in 1929, Gans returned to Ausleben to manage the family estate, a role he held starting in 1932. Throughout his life, he continued to paint landscapes in his homeland, Sanssouci, Munich, Starnberg, and Andechs. Following the expropriation of his property by the GDR authorities, he fled to West Berlin in 1954 before settling back in Starnberg.
In his later years, Gans turned to painting professionally to support himself. His late style was characterized by soft pastel tones, a development influenced by his struggle with progressive macular degeneration, which required the use of special glasses to continue his work. He died in Starnberg.
