      A Life Between Continents

Hervé Télémaque was a French painter of Haitian origin. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, he later moved to New York City in 1957, where he studied at the Art Student's League until 1960. During his time in the United States, his work was influenced by abstract expressionism and surrealism. His painting Sirène, held at the Musée Sainte-Croix, reflected his daily life in Brooklyn Heights. In 1961, he moved to France and settled in Paris.

His artistic career is associated with the surrealism and narrative figuration movements. He participated in the Narrative Figuration movement alongside artists such as Bernard Rancillac, Eduardo Arroyo, Peter Klasen, Öyvind Fahlström, and Jacques Monory. In 1964, he helped organize the exhibition "Mythologies quotidiennes."

      Artistic Evolution and Techniques

Télémaque's work explored various mediums and styles over his career:

      • In the 1960s, he utilized pop art elements, including comic strips, the episcope, and acrylic.
      • Between 1962 and 1964, he produced diptychs featuring anatomical pieces and visual metaphors like crosses, arrows, and masks on white backgrounds.
      • From 1968 to 1969, he practiced assemblage through "lean sculptures."
      • In the 1970s, he adopted a style with solid colours and explored drawing and collages.
      • Later works included large-format charcoal drawings and low-reliefs using jigsaw pieces.
      • He also experimented with mixing coffee grounds with coloured pigments to create texture.

His subject matter often included objects from his lived experience in Haiti, such as tents, sports equipment, and items related to voodoo. He received several public commissions, including a monumental mural titled Vallée de l'Omo for the Cité des sciences et de l'industrie de La Villette.
