      A Life in Paris

Born in Paris, France, Jean Tortebat was the twenty-ninth child of the painter and engraver François Tortebat. Having studied under his father, he demonstrated an early talent for painting. In 1672, he achieved success by winning third prize in the Rome competition, an honor that earned him a gift of painting instruments. As a portraitist, he was highly sought after by prominent figures of his era, and he was admitted to the Academy on October 3, 1699, following his portraits of Houasse and Jean Jouvenet.

Tortebat was recognized for his exceptional skill as a draftsman, characterized by a meticulous attention to accessories and a conscientious execution that made his work highly desirable during his lifetime. He remained single throughout his life and passed away in his native city on November 10, 1718. He was buried the following day in the Saint-Paul cemetery.
