A Life of Color and Form
Born in Zurich, Switzerland, Jean Weinbaum was a painter and artist who explored a diverse range of mediums. His artistic journey began in Zurich at the School of Applied Arts before he moved to Paris in 1946. During his time in France, he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Paul Colin drawing school, as well as the Académie André Lhote. His technical expertise extended to the study of stained glass techniques used by 13th-century glassmakers in the Chartres Cathedral.

Through this engagement, he participated in historical exhibitions alongside artists such as Jean Arp, Sonia Delaunay, and Fernand Léger. His travels eventually led him through India, Ceylon, Thailand, and Japan, before he settled in San Francisco in 1968.
Artistic Technique and Legacy
Weinbaum is recognized for a unique "fused watercolor" technique. This method involves applying curving bands of intense color to water-saturated paper or in collages, using a liberal amount of water in the pigment. This process creates fragmented curves of color, reminiscent of a rainbow viewed through a kaleidoscope, resulting in an effect described as having the abstract vitality of music.
His works are held in various prestigious collections, including:
