The Life and Career of Johan Daniël Ebersbach
Johan Daniël Ebersbach was a Dutch painter and lithographer who lived through much of the nineteenth century. Born in Dordrecht, Netherlands, in 1822, he spent his working years focused on the visual arts. His professional activity spanned from 1837 until 1900. During this time, he shared a studio with Johannes Engel Masurel, a connection that placed him within a specific circle of artistic practice in the Netherlands.
His life followed a steady path through the Dutch landscape. After decades of work, he died in Rotterdam on February 26, 1900. His output as a painter and lithographer reflects a long engagement with his craft, maintaining a presence in the art world for over sixty years.
Notable Artworks and Artistic Subjects
Ebersbach’s brushwork often settled on the quiet movements of daily life and the specific details of character. In his oil painting Figures Strolling Along A Canal, there is a focus on the way people occupy a space, moving through a landscape defined by water and architecture. His ability to capture a specific moment is also seen in Anno 1628. De scheepskapitein van de Frederik Hendrik verliest een been, a work that looks back at a particular historical scene involving a ship's captain. These subjects suggest an interest in both the social flow of a city and the weight of individual history.
The artist also turned his attention to the individual through portraiture. His depiction of Bartholomeus Theodus Lublink Weddik, created about 1846, captures the likeness of a specific man, focusing on the presence required for a formal sitting. Beyond these larger compositions, his hand appeared in smaller, more intimate formats. He produced an ets van jonge poes, showing a capacity for the fine, detailed lines required in printmaking to render the soft features of a young cat.
