A Life in Düsseldorf
Joseph Schex was a German painter associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Born in Wesel, Germany, he began his formal training at the Königliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, where he was admitted to the elementary class in 1835. His artistic education progressed through the construction class of Carl Schäffer and the mentorship of Karl Ferdinand Sohn, through which he developed his skills as a history and genre painter.
His life was marked by significant movement and civic engagement. After serving as a lieutenant in the von Tann’s Freicorps during the Schleswig uprising, he emigrated to London in 1851, where he lived among German merchants and earned a living through occasional portrait commissions. He returned to Wesel in 1852 before settling permanently in Düsseldorf in 1857. Beyond his studio, Schex was an active member of the Malkasten artists' association and participated in the preparations for the Academy's "Semisäcular-Feier."
