      A Life Between Borders

Born in Odessa, Ukraine, in 1924, Moshe Tamir moved to Israel as a young boy in 1931. His early education began at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, where he studied until 1944. This formative period in Jerusalem provided the foundation for a career that would eventually span the major art capitals of Europe. After leaving Bezalel, he sought further refinement in Italy, graduating from the Fine Arts Academy in Rome in 1952. His academic pursuits continued at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he completed advanced studies in 1955.

The mid-century years saw Tamir living and working in Montparnasse for seven years, a period of intense creative development. During his time in Paris, he existed alongside figures such as Jean Dubuffet and Constantin Brâncuşi. This exposure to the European avant-garde helped him develop what became known as New Figuration. His work during this era was characterized by thick, colorful layers of paint and compositions filled with mythological imagery and dense shapes.

      Technique and Form

Tamir did not limit himself to a single medium, instead moving between various methods to achieve his vision. He possessed a particular skill for monumental painting and fresco, a discipline he learned while serving as an assistant to Prozzo Parchi at the Church of St. Eugene in Rome. His technical repertoire was broad, encompassing:

His approach to the surface of his work was often heavy and textured. Whether working on a small easel painting or a large-scale mural, he maintained a focus on mythological themes. One notable example of his fresco work is Wounded Amnon, a piece that earned him an award at the Tel Aviv Artist's House in 1949 and remains part of the permanent collection at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

      Recognition and Later Years

Throughout his career, Tamir received several honors that reflected his standing in both Israeli and international art circles. In 1947, he received the Bezalel Hermann Struck prize, presented by Mordechai Ardon. His graphic work was also recognized on a global stage, notably winning first prize at the Museum of Rio de Janeiro during the Biennale of São Paulo in 1961. Beyond his studio practice, he held significant administrative roles, serving as the Director of "New Bezalel" in Jerusalem in 1961 and later as a national inspector of art studies.

His work found its way into major institutions across several continents, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, and the Denver Art Museum. Even as his career progressed toward large-scale commissions, such as the interior planning for the Convention Hall at Palazzo Vecchio in 1980, he remained rooted in the figurative traditions he had refined in Rome and Paris. He passed away on 13 November 2004.
