The Artistic Journey of Reinhold Heller
Reinhold Heller was a German painter and art educator. During his studies at the Munich Academy from 1953 to 1958 under Richard Seewald, he experienced the rise of non-objective painting. In 1955, he joined the artist group Quattrocento alongside like-minded individuals. Heller sought to view his work as part of art history rather than a complete break from tradition. He was a member of the artist group Wir, joining in 1961, which later merged with the group SPUR to form Geflecht in 1966.
His work often maintained a connection to the object, a trait he shared with figures such as Picasso, Asger Jorn, and Hans Platschek. His compositions were frequently centered, inspired by the baroque spatial experience. Around 1970, Heller stepped back from painting to focus on his teaching position, his family, and violin making. In the 1980s, he entered a musical late period where he sought to synthesize his passions for art and music.
