      A Life of Maritime Artistry

Born in Nantes, France, René Pinard was a painter and engraver who dedicated much of his career to the sea. After studying at the municipal drawing school in Nantes, he entered the École des beaux-arts de Paris, where he studied under Fernand Cormon. His technical proficiency was recognized early through various awards in etching, and he eventually gained permanent admission to the École des beaux-arts. His life was deeply intertwined with maritime themes; during the First World War, he served on a minesweeper, the Kerdonis, based in Lorient. Later, he was appointed as a Navy painter, a position he held for many years, which allowed him to travel aboard the cruiser-school Jeanne-d'Arc to Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia.

      Accolades and Legacy

Throughout his career, Pinard received numerous prestigious distinctions for his work. His artistic achievements include:

In addition to his paintings, he illustrated the work of Marc Elder titled À bord des chalutiers dragueurs de mines. He was also a member of the jury for the Société coloniale des artistes français. Pinard passed away in Paris, and a bust of him stands upon his grave in the Saint-Clair cemetery.
