A Hand at the Imperial Brush

Shen Tu lived during the Ming Dynasty, moving through the halls of power in a time when the brush held weight in the imperial court. Born in what is now Shanghai, his life was tied to the rhythms of official service and the meticulous demands of calligraphy. He held titles such as Shih-chang-hsueh-shih and Feng-hsun-ta-fu of the Han-lin-yuan, roles that placed him close to the center of administrative life. The Yongle Emperor found a particular use for his hand, trusting him with the transcription of the most important official documents of the state.

His work was not merely about the movement of ink, but about the precision required by the throne. When the emperor needed records or decrees to carry the weight of authority, Shen Tu’s calligraphy provided that stability. He worked with ink and color on silk, a medium that requires a steady, unhurried touch to prevent the fibers from absorbing too much or too little.

      The Arrival of the Giraffe

In the ninth month of 1414, a specific event brought his painting to life. Bengali envoys arrived at the court, presenting a tribute giraffe to the Yongle Emperor. This animal was seen as more than a biological curiosity; it was viewed through the lens of the Qilin, a mythical creature of good omen. The emperor commissioned Shen Tu to capture this moment on silk.

The resulting work, often called Tribute Giraffe with Attendant or the Auspicious Giraffe, shows the animal alongside an attendant. In his painting, Shen Tu included details like fish-like scales, connecting the physical creature to the legendary beast of Chinese lore. He also composed an ode and a preface to accompany the image, weaving his calligraphy into the visual narrative. The text speaks of the arrival of the creature as a sign of peace and virtue spreading through the land.

      Legacy in Ink

While much of his life remains tied to the quiet work of transcription and official duty, his contribution to the visual record of the Ming Dynasty is clear. His ability to blend the written word with the painted form allowed him to document the intersection of diplomacy and myth. The copies of his poems and paintings that exist today show how his hand helped define the visual language of an era marked by significant maritime encounters.
