The Artistic Evolution of Sidney Gross
Sidney Gross was an American painter and graphic artist born in New York City. His early work was characterized by the influence of Social realism and the emerging Surrealist Movement. By the age of twenty, he had developed a style of urban surrealism while also producing portraits that earned critical admiration. Throughout his career, he explored various artistic expressions, including experiments with abstract expressionism and what some critics described as amorphorism, specifically through his soft, diffuse, and numbered Dusky abstractions.
As his career progressed, Gross moved toward large and dynamic works of Abstract Expressionism. Around 1960, his UFO and Probe Series introduced controlled abstractions set against hard edge geometric fields of color. His later works featured expressionistic forms within wide bands of color separated by white fields. His work is held in numerous permanent collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
