      Early Life, Family and Training

Born in London on 16 December 1838, Thomas Charles Farrer entered a world that would shape his meticulous approach to the visual arts. His early development was rooted in the city's educational landscape, specifically within a free school established by John Ruskin. It was here that he first learned the fundamentals of drawing, a discipline that would define his subsequent career as both a painter and a teacher of painting.

Artistry ran deep within his family. He was the elder brother of Henry Farrer, who was born in London on 23 March 1843. While Thomas would eventually find success in both the United Kingdom and the United States, Henry would also pursue a life in the arts, establishing himself as a painter and etcher. This shared inclination toward the arts suggests a domestic environment steeped in the technical and aesthetic concerns of the nineteenth century.

      Activity in the United States

Arriving in New York in 1858, Farrer sought to establish himself within the American art scene. He found success not only through his own brush but also as a painting instructor, sharing his technical knowledge with others in the growing city. His presence in the American landscape was marked by a period of significant professional engagement, as he became a regular contributor to the National Academy in New York City. Between 1862 and 1868, his work also found a place at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

The stability of his artistic career was interrupted by the onset of the American Civil War. During this period of national upheaval, he put aside his easel to serve in the Union Army. This period of service marked a departure from his life as a teacher and painter, adding a layer of personal experience to his years in the United States. After the conflict had passed, he returned to his creative pursuits, continuing to exhibit his work in major American institutions before his eventual return to London.

Return to London and Later Years

The American chapter of his life drew to a close in 1869 when he returned to London. This homecoming marked a transition from his years as a successful painting instructor and soldier in the Union Army back to the city of his birth. He spent his final years within the English art circles, maintaining a presence in the professional landscape after his extensive time abroad.

His life reached its conclusion on 16 June 1891 in London. Following his death, the administration of his personal estate was granted to his widow, Anne Richards Farrer, on 28 July 1891. He left behind a family of artists, including his brother Henry, who had also navigated the artistic connections between Britain and the United States.

      Key Works and Exhibitions

Farrer’s presence in the exhibition halls of the National Academy in New York City marked a significant chapter of his career. In 1867, he presented Field-Lily and Twilight on the Hudson, works that established his ability to handle light and atmosphere. His output continued with Beach at Hastings and English Farm in 1871, followed by a shift toward more architectural and varied subjects. By 1872, his contributions included Caernarvon Castle, Wales and Interior of St. Mark's, Venice, demonstrating a reach that extended from the ruggedness of the Welsh coast to the storied spaces of Italy.

As his career progressed, his focus remained on the subtle nuances of the natural world. He exhibited Sunset in 1875, a study in the changing qualities of light. The late 1870s saw him presenting Yorkshire Trout Stream, Coming through the Lock, and Rochester Castle in 1878. These works reflected a persistent interest in the quiet, often overlooked details of the landscape. Beyond his success in America, he also contributed paintings to the exhibitions of the Royal Academy in London, maintaining a professional connection to the artistic circles of his birthplace.
