The Artistic Evolution of Wilhelm Wessel
Wilhelm Wessel was a German painter, graphic artist, and illustrator. His early artistic journey included contacts with Kurt Schwitters and Wassily Kandinsky, followed by studies at the Staatliche Hochschule für Kunst in Berlin, where he studied under Karl Hofer. After serving as a soldier and war painter during the war, he settled in his hometown of Iserlohn in 1945 to work as a freelance artist.
His work underwent significant stylistic shifts over the decades. In the 1950s, he gained recognition for informel paintings characterized by dark tones and a relief-like, earthy application of color featuring cracks and fissures. He later increased the material emphasis in his paintings by incorporating elements such as scraps of fabric and newspaper clippings. By the 1960s, his style transitioned toward relief-like images with light backgrounds and restless, linear structures, eventually leading to the creation of unique script images and script collages from 1967 until his death.
