Following his studies at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes, he worked as an illustrator for various Rio de Janeiro newspapers. His architectural career was distinguished by his partnership with Affonso Eduardo Reidy, contributing to significant projects such as the Albergue da Boa Vontade and the Ministry of Health and Education. He was a prominent figure in architectural debates and served as a professor and director at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes.

Beyond architecture, Pompeu was a prolific painter and art critic. His technical mastery was recognized in numerous exhibitions, including the Salão Nacional de Belas Artes, where he received several awards. In his later years, he also explored music, particularly the violin.
