He sought formal training at the Leicester School of Art under Wilmot Pilsbury, a period that proved foundational to his technical skill. He spent time teaching art in Leicester and lived in various locations including Sydenham in London, Horsham in Surrey, and later in West Sussex towns like Billingshurst and Midhurst.
