Early Life and Artistic Training Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1945, James Phillips spent his formative years in rural Virginia. This transition from the urban landscape of New York to the countryside shaped his early perspective before he turned toward formal instruction. His path toward a professional practice began in earnest during the 1960s when he moved to Philadelphia to study at the Fleisher Art Memorial School. His technical education continued at the Philadelphia College of Art, where he studied from 1964 to 1965.
