A Life Between Lviv and Bordeaux

Born in the quiet village of Kołbajowice near Sambor, Aleksander Titz began his life with a mind shaped by both law and philosophy. He pursued university studies in Lviv, immersing himself in the complexities of legal and philosophical thought, yet his heart drifted toward the visual arts. This duality of intellect and hand defined his early years. Seeking to refine his natural talent, he traveled to France, where he deepened his understanding of painting through formal lessons and lived for several years as a drawing teacher in Bordeaux. The light of France left its mark on him, influencing the way he would later perceive the landscapes of his home.

In 1848, the pull of his roots brought him back to Lviv. He spent the remainder of his days in this city, balancing his creative pursuits with a quieter life of instruction and printmaking. His return marked a period where he could focus on the faces and places that defined his surroundings. Though his time was cut short by his death in Lviv in 1856, the years he spent between the classrooms of Bordeaux and the studios of Galicia allowed him to develop a versatile hand capable of both delicate miniature work and larger oil compositions.

The Art of the Portrait and the Print

Titz possessed a remarkable ability to capture the essence of his contemporaries through various mediums. As a painter, he moved between the intimacy of portraits and the expansive nature of landscapes. His lithographic work, in particular, allowed him to reach a broader audience, documenting the notable figures of Lviv with precision. He recorded the likenesses of individuals such as the brothers Apolinary and Antoni Kątski, the naturalist Aleksander Zawadzki, and the lawyer Ludwik Biegelmayer.

His skill extended beyond the human face to the very architecture and scenery of the region. Through the lithographic press of Pillers, he produced detailed views of Lviv and a series of five views of Truskavets in 1854. These prints offered a permanent record of the landscape as it existed in the mid-nineteenth century. His technical range included:

      • Oil paintings on canvas, such as his landscape from Brittany.
      • Detailed lithographic portraits of prominent local citizens.
      • Small-scale miniatures that required immense control.
      • Topographical views of cities and spa towns like Truskavets.

A Legacy in Oil and Stone

The work of Aleksander Titz remains a window into the nineteenth-century atmosphere of Lviv and the broader European landscape. His ability to transition from the academic rigor of his legal studies to the fluid demands of oil painting gave his work a grounded, observant quality. He did not merely seek to decorate; he sought to document. Whether through the textured surface of an oil painting or the sharp lines of a lithograph, he captured the textures of the world around him.

Today, pieces of his output reside in significant collections, such as the National Museum in Kraków, where his landscapes continue to be studied for their historical and technical merit. His life, though brief, bridged the gap between the intellectual pursuits of a scholar and the observant eye of a chronicler, leaving behind a visual record of a vanished era.
