The life of Armand Désiré Gautier
Born in Lille, France, on 19 June 1825, Armand Désiré Gautier began his path far from the canvas. He spent time as an apprentice lithographer and studied engineering before turning toward the arts. In 1845, his parents sent him to the Académie in Lille to study under the sculptor Augustin-Phidias Cadet de Beaupré. Later, between 1847 and 1850, he worked within the studio of François Souchon. His training eventually led him to Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Léon Cogniet.
His time in Paris was marked by a period spent as a medical student. This experience brought him into the halls of the Salpêtrière hospital, where he conducted studies that would later find their way into his work. He shared living quarters with Paul Gachet, a connection that placed him within a circle of artists interested in the realities of modern life. His early years in the city were spent frequenting the Brasserie Andler, a place where many painters of the era gathered.
Artistic pursuits and subjects
Gautier’s work often focused on figures and still lifes. He used oil on canvas, lithography, etching, and pastel to capture his subjects. His paintings frequently addressed modern societal themes, including religious scenes and portraits. One of his notable works, Madwomen of La Salpêtrière, was born from his observations within the asylum, following a tradition of scientific realism. He also exhibited works such as L'Indolence and Thursday Promenade.
His technical approach included:
- Lithography and etching
- Academic draftsmanship
- The use of chiaroscuro
- Pastel work
In 1863, he participated in the first Salon des Refusés, exhibiting The Adulteress. His later years saw him returning to the Salon to show portraits and religious scenes until 1888. During his time in Paris, he was also a member of the revolutionary movement of the Commune, which led to his arrest and sentencing in June 1871.
Later years and recognition
Gautier received several honors during his career, including a third-class medal at the Paris Salon of 1882. He was also named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. As he aged, his focus shifted away from the intense realism of his earlier years. In his final years, he lived as a recluse in the village of Ecouen.
He died in Paris on 29 January 1894. His works remain in various collections, including the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen and the Musée Courbet in Ornans.
