A Life in Toulouse
Antoine Durand was a French painter born in Toulouse. During his youth, he traveled to Paris, where he learned the art of portraiture, a genre in which he demonstrated significant talent. His skill in capturing likenesses was such that he was eventually appointed as the painter for the Toulouse city hall, a position he held starting in 1645. The city council recognized his ability to paint "au naturel", and his reputation grew to the point that he was one of the best-paid employees of the city.
His professional life was marked by significant commissions, including the portraits of the capitouls for the city's annals. He also painted a work depicting the entry of King Louis XIV into Toulouse on October 14, 1659, which was displayed in the great hall of the Hôtel de Ville. Throughout his career, Durand's influence extended to the next generation of artists, as he served as a teacher to André Lebré and Jean de Troy.
Artistic Legacy and Works
While Durand was highly regarded for his portraiture, historical records suggest he was considered less proficient in the genre of history painting. His technical mastery was evident in his ability to secure long-term contracts, such as a ten-year agreement to paint the portrait of the city's syndic. Despite professional rivalries and debates within the city council regarding his output and compensation, Durand remained a central figure in the artistic life of Toulouse until his death in 1680.
