Early Life, Family and Training
Ármin Glatter enters the world on April 24, 1861, in Moldava nad Bodvou, Hungary. His path does not lead immediately to the canvas. He begins his intellectual pursuits in the study of law, a discipline far removed from the visual arts. This academic detour is short-lived. The pull toward painting proves stronger than the legal profession, prompting a decisive shift in his trajectory.
The transition to formal training begins in Budapest. From 1882 to 1885, Glatter studies at the Mintarajziskola, working under the instruction of Károly Lotz. This foundation prepares him for a move across borders. On October 18, 1886, he arrives at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. There, he enters the studio of Gabriel von Hackl, refining the technical skills that will define his later career.
Artistry becomes a family legacy. The talent is not confined to Ármin Glatter alone, as the creative impulse extends to his children. His son, Gyula Glatter (1886–1927), pursues a career as a painter. His daughter, Etel Glatter (1893–1952), also takes up the brush, ensuring the family name remains tied to the visual arts for another generation.
Career and Artistic Activities
The professional trajectory of Ármin Glatter moves through the major cultural hubs of Europe. Following his formal training, he undertakes study trips through Germany, Russia, and Italy. A year is spent in Paris, absorbing the atmosphere of the French capital before returning to the Hungarian art scene. By 1888, his presence in the Budapest art world is established through frequent exhibitions at the Budapest Art Hall.
Glatter’s influence extends into the institutional and communal structures of Hungarian art. He becomes a founding member of the SÉSZEK artists' association, helping to shape the local creative community. His role as an educator begins in 1897, when he teaches at the "Freischule für Malerinnen" in Budapest, led by Sándor Bihnari and Imre Knopp. Later, he brings his expertise to the Jewish art school that opens in 1921.

Artistic Style and Key Works
Glatter focuses his lens on the human figure, establishing himself primarily as a portrait and genre painter. His brushwork frequently settles on the female form, capturing women in various states of repose or activity. These portraits often take the intimate shape of miniatures, requiring a precise, delicate touch to translate character onto a small scale. He moves between these quiet, scaled-down studies and larger compositions that define the domestic or social atmosphere of his subjects.
The tension between stillness and movement defines much of his output. In Figurative Embroiderer, painted about 1890–1900, he captures a moment of focused, repetitive labor, grounding the subject in a specific, tactile reality. This interest in the quietude of daily life shifts toward a more contemplative tone in his later years. Girl with a Book (1920) presents a study of a subject lost in thought, a departure from the more active genre scenes of his earlier period.
