A Life of Artistic Versatility
Bernhard Wiegandt was a German painter, illustrator, scenographer, draftsperson, and graphic artist. Born in Cologne, Kingdom of Prussia, he received his initial drawing instruction from Johannes Niessen. His formal training began with an apprenticeship as a theater painter in Berlin between 1870 and 1873, which led to a position as a scenographer for the theater in Hannover. Seeking new experiences, he lived in Brazil from 1875 to 1880, where he captured his impressions primarily through watercolors, such as his work titled Belém.
His academic journey continued with studies at the Düsseldorf Academy and later at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich under Gyula Benczúr and Ludwig von Löfftz. Wiegandt's diverse professional output included:
Landscapes and Legacy
After settling in Bremen in 1890, Wiegandt became an art teacher, notably instructing Paula Modersohn-Becker between 1893 and 1895. His landscape and architectural works were inspired by various locations, including Bremen, Worpswede, Fischerhude, the Heath, the North Sea coast, Helgoland, Norway, the Rhön, and Thuringia. He established an atelier in Fischerhude in 1902.
Wiegandt's artistic legacy extended to his family, as both of his daughters, Bertha and Else Wiegandt, were trained by him and became painters. Bertha was a portraitist, while Else specialized in animal paintings and portraits. His work also included the portfolio Das malerische Bremen (1890) and a late work titled Bremen vom Weserwehr.
