Early Life and Family Background
Born in Paris, France, on 4 November 1826, Charles Hugo entered a world shaped by the heavy shadow of a famous literary legacy. He was the second son of the novelist Victor Hugo and Adèle Foucher. Growing up within such a prominent household, his path was shaped by the intellectual currents of his time. He would eventually find his own voice through various pursuits, working as a journalist, writer, and opinion journalist, while also exploring the emerging medium of photography.
His early years showed a certain promise in the intellectual and competitive circles of France. In 1840, he received the Concours général, a recognition that marked his early standing. This period of his life was defined by the weight of his family name and the expectations that accompanied it. He was not merely a relative of a great man, but a man developing his own distinct interests in the written word and the captured image.
Journalism and Exile in Jersey
The life of Charles Hugo was marked by a fierce commitment to his convictions, a trait that led him into direct conflict with the authorities of his time. In 1851, his voice as a journalist drew the ire of the state when he wrote an article for the daily newspaper L'Evénement. His opposition to capital punishment was not merely a matter of opinion but a stance that carried heavy consequences; he was sentenced to six months in jail and ordered to pay a fine of five hundred francs.
Political shifts soon forced a change in his surroundings. Following the rise of Napoleon III in 1851, Charles chose to join his father in voluntary exile on the island of Jersey. This period of displacement, while born of political necessity, allowed him to explore the burgeoning medium of photography. Alongside August Vacquerie, he spent his time on the island capturing the likenesses of family members and friends through the lens.
These photographic efforts were intended for a larger purpose, as the group aimed to publish a volume titled Jersey et les îles de la Manche. This planned work was meant to combine the prose of Vacquerie, Charles, and his brother François with the poetry and drawings of his father. However, the publication never reached the hands of the public. Instead, the images remained intimate, compiled into private albums that were shared only among a close circle of friends.
