Early Life, Family and Training
Charles Lapostolet was born in Velars-sur-Ouche, France, on September 26, 1824. He came from a family with deep roots in that same region. During the 18th century, the Lapostolet family worked as cultivators and landowners, managing the soil and the property that defined their existence. By the time Charles was born, the family's connection to the land remained a central part of their history.
Before committing fully to the brush, Charles Lapostolet spent time as a grain merchant in Melun. This period of trade and commerce preceded his formal development in the arts. He eventually entered the studio of Léon Cogniet, where he began to learn the discipline of painting. Under Cogniet's guidance, he moved away from the family's mercantile interests and toward the study of light and landscape.
Artistic Style and Technique
Lapostolet focused his brush on the movement of water and the quiet life of the coast. His compositions often followed a specific, structured arrangement: a foreground of water, a narrow strip of land, and a wide expanse of sky. This method allowed him to organize the landscape into clear, readable layers. He drew much of his inspiration from the 17th-century Dutch painters, adopting their way of looking at the horizon and the interplay between sea and air.
His palette remained light, favoring fine colors that captured the subtle shifts in natural light. He had a particular interest in the activity of ports, spending much of his time painting the shores between Honfleur, Rouen, Étretat, and Dieppe. In these scenes, he sought to record the specific atmosphere of the water's edge. His work often centered on the way light hit the surface of the Seine or the salt air of the Normandy coast.

Exhibitions and Recognition
His presence in the official art circles began in 1848, when he first showed his work at the Salon de Paris. He remained a regular fixture there for decades, continuing to exhibit his maritime scenes and port views until 1882. This long-standing involvement with the Salon brought him consistent recognition from his peers and the institutions of the time.
The weight of his technical skill was acknowledged through medals awarded in 1870 and again in 1882. These honors followed a period of steady work capturing the light on the water. His reach extended beyond the borders of France, as seen in 1872 when his paintings were included in the Royal Academy in London. His work found its way into several public collections, including the museums in Dijon, Rouen, and Lille.
Later Years and Death
The later years of his life were marked by a continued connection to the maritime landscapes he loved. He maintained a friendship with Eugène Boudin, a bond formed during their time in Honfleur. His interests often led him away from the French coast to seek out different light and water, including travels to Venice and Holland. These trips allowed him to observe the specific qualities of the canals and the northern skies that had long influenced his brushwork.
His life came to an end in Domène on July 24, 1890. He passed away at the family property of the Chevrant family. This connection to the Chevrant lineage was tied to his daughter, Jeanne, who had married into their family, which held interests in the paper mills of Grésivaudan.
