The Life and Art of Édouard Sain
Born in Cluny, France, Édouard Alexandre Sain was a painter who demonstrated early academic excellence. After studying at the Valenciennes Academy, he entered the studio of François-Édouard Picot and was admitted to the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, where he won all the medals. His early career involved a variety of subjects, including historical scenes, genre subjects, and portraits. During a period spent in Écouen, he painted rustic scenes in the plein air style, such as Vénus et l'Amour and a group of chimney sweeps. His work also included a historical painting from the period of Louis XV and an oil painting commemorating a visit by the Emperor and Empress of France to the crèche of Sister Rosalie.
Italian Travels and Later Works
Sain's travels through Italy significantly shaped his repertoire. In 1863, he traveled to Rome and later to Naples, where he drew Mount Vesuvius and visited Pompei. His time in Capri inspired various works, including Fouilles à Pompéi, Fileuse à Capri, and Le Repas de noces à Capri. These experiences were later recorded in his 1879 book, Souvenirs d'Italie. Impressions de voyage. From the late 1870s, Sain focused on portraits and female nudes, often depicting members of fashionable society with an emphasis on composition, accessories, and expression.
