A life in Småland and Stockholm
Emma Amalia Ekwall began her life in Gransbo, within the region of Småland. She grew up in a household where art was a shared language, being the daughter of Nils Fredrik Ekvall and the sister to Knut, Gustaf, and Hugo. Her brother Knut also found his way into painting and illustration. Between 1865 and 1871, she spent her days at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, refining her hand alongside her peers.
Her time at the Academy led to a specific recognition in 1871, when she became the first woman in Sweden to receive a royal medal. This period of study provided the foundation for travels that took her beyond Swedish borders. She spent time in Munich and Leipzig, absorbing the atmosphere of these German cities before eventually returning to her work in Stockholm.
The subjects of her brush
Her paintings often turned toward the quiet corners of domestic life. She focused her attention on portraits, particularly those of children, as well as floral still lifes and genre scenes. There is a specific softness in how she approached these subjects, using an impressionistic style characterized by mild colors. Her work frequently captured interior motifs, such as the quiet stillness found in nurseries.
The details of her practice reveal a preference for certain themes:
- Portraits of children
- Floral still lifes
- Genre scenes and interior motifs from nurseries
Legacy and presence
By the time she passed away in Stockholm in 1925, her work had found its place in significant collections. Pieces of her output can be seen today in the Nationalmuseum and the Göteborgs Konstmuseum. Her paintings remain as records of a specific way of seeing, from the delicate petals of her flowers to the faces of the children she painted.
