      The Painter of Parisian Life

Ernest Quost lived a life deeply rooted in the atmosphere of France. Born in Avallon, he eventually found his way to Paris, where his artistic identity took shape. He likely studied under Horace Aumont during his time in the capital, a period that prepared him for his debut at the Paris Salon in 1866. His work was never about grand, abstract ideas; instead, he focused on the tangible beauty of the world around him.

He had a particular affection for the movement of the city. Quost captured the energy of the boulevards, the social rhythms of Parisian dances, and the quiet life found in urban landscapes. He was often seen as a painter of Paris itself, documenting the bustle of the streets and the local society with a keen eye for detail. His process was methodical. He would begin with numerous sketches in the field to capture the essence of nature, later returning to his studio to develop these observations into finished compositions.

Beyond the city streets, his canvases were filled with the quiet presence of flowers and fruit. These still lifes and landscapes allowed him to explore light and color through a more intimate lens. His talent for floral painting was noted by his contemporaries, including Claude Monet. Even Vincent van Gogh found inspiration in his work, referring to "the hollyhocks belong to Quost" and affectionately calling him "The Hollyhock" because of his specialty in such subjects.

      Recognition and Legacy

Throughout his career, Quost earned significant respect within the French art community. His contributions to the Salon des Artistes Français were marked by several honors. He received medals in 1880 and 1882, and later earned further recognition in 1889, 1890, and 1900. These achievements led to his becoming an associate of the Salon in 1887. His service to the arts was also recognized by the state; he was named a Chevalier of the Legion d’honneur in 1883 and later promoted to Officer in 1903.

While he was highly regarded during his lifetime, much of his work remained within his family's workshop for decades. Until the 1970s, many of his pieces were not widely seen by the public. This period of relative obscurity meant that while his influence lived on through students like Pierre Eugène Montézin, his name was not as frequently discussed in the broader art market as it might have been. Today, his paintings can be found in several important collections:

      • Musée d’Orsay, Paris: Including works such as Flowers for Planting and Greenhouse.
      • Musée Marmottan, Paris: Holding various floral studies.
      • Other notable locations: Works are held in museums across Bernay, Castres, Gray, Limoges, Nancy, and Rouen.

Quost passed away in Paris in 1931, leaving behind a body of work that remains a window into the light and life of late 19th-century France.
