The direction of his life shifted in 1957 when he was admitted to the art school of Bamse Kragh-Jacobsen. This transition marked the beginning of a dedicated period of study and creative development. Under the guidance of Kragh-Jacobsen, Mickelborg underwent a rigorous five-year art education that helped shape his understanding of form and composition.

Finn Mickelborg’s visual language underwent a significant shift as his career progressed. He began his artistic path exploring the dreamlike realms of Surrealism, but he eventually moved toward the disciplined structure of constructive painting. This transition brought a new sense of order to his canvases, replacing surreal imagery with a focus on geometry and spatial logic. His compositions often relied on precise arrangements and the use of transparent planes to build a sense of depth.

To achieve his specific visual effects, he turned to the spray gun, a tool that allowed him to modulate colors with a softness that traditional brushes might not permit. This technique enabled him to create refined color gradations and subtle tonal transitions. His work often split into two distinct atmospheric directions. He frequently composed large, dark space landscapes that felt vast and quiet. In other instances, he worked with stark black and white lines to create optical illusions, challenging the viewer's perception of the surface.

In 1976, he became a co-founder of the artist group Ny Abstraktion, a move that signaled his commitment to new directions in modern art. His leadership qualities eventually led him to serve as the chairman of Grønningen, a position he held starting in 1990.

His contributions to the arts were recognized through several significant honors. In 1988, he was awarded the Eckersberg Medal. He was also the recipient of the Sødrings-Preis and the LO-Kulturpreis. Beyond his own practice, he shared his expertise by serving as an advisor to the Statens Kunstfond, helping to guide the direction of Danish art funding and support.

His later years also saw significant production, including the 1996 acrylic on canvas piece titled Spektrum. This large-scale work, measuring 110 x 148 cm, demonstrates his ability to handle expansive surfaces with clarity.

His ability to manipulate space and color is evident in several other compositions. In 1978, he produced Uden titel, an acrylic on canvas measuring 100 x 120 cm. This piece belongs to a period of focused experimentation with his medium. Another example of his mid-nineties output is Composition, a 1996 work measuring 71x58cm.
