Early Life, Family and Training
František Kaláb was born in 1908 in Brno-Zábrdovice, within the borders of Austria-Hungary. He was the son of František Kaláb, a man who worked as a construction manual writer, and Marie Hefné. At his baptism, he was given the name František Serafínský.
His formal training began in Prague, where he moved to study the technical and creative aspects of his craft. He attended the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM) and later the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. During these years, he studied under the guidance of Josef Bendy and Otakar Nejedlý. These formative years in the city shaped the foundation of his later work in painting and illustration.
Artistic Style and Techniques
His brushwork and compositions often carry the weight of cubism and orphism. There is a certain rhythmic quality to his arrangements, shaped by these movements, alongside a poetic sensibility reminiscent of Marc Chagall. He moved between the structured geometry of form and a more lyrical, dreamlike approach to his subjects. This duality is visible in how he handled space, whether in a quiet still life or a more complex figurative scene.
The artist was not confined to the canvas. He applied his eye to the stage, creating designs for the Zemské divadlo in Brno. This sense of spatial arrangement extended to his work with books, where he handled typographic layouts and illustrations. His technical range included lithography on paper, allowing him to explore different textures and tonal qualities beyond the traditional medium of painting.
Key Works and Genres
His brush often settled on the quiet arrangements of daily life. In his still life paintings, objects find a place within the frame, such as in Zátiší s citromy from 1936 or the composition Zátiší s kyticí. He also looked toward the human form, capturing figures in various states of being. His 1935 work Matka s děckem and the 1937 piece Zpěvačky show a focus on the presence of people, while Španělská tanečnice and Žena s kytarou explore movement and posture. Even in simpler studies, like Dívčí hlava, the focus remains on the subject at hand.
Beyond the studio, he moved through the landscape and the street. His 1930 painting Ulice captures a sense of place, much like his later landscape works. He also spent time working on illustrations, translating lines and shapes onto paper to accompany text. His interests were varied, ranging from the broad views of a landscape to the intimate details of a single figure or a group of people gathered together.
