The Life of Gregor von Bochmann
Gregor von Bochmann was a Baltic-German landscape and genre painter. Born in Nehatu, Kreis Wiek, Governorate of Estonia, he spent much of his early life traveling with his father, a forest warden. His formal education began at the Gustav Adolf Grammar School in Tallinn, where his talent was recognized by his teacher, Theodor Albert Sprengel. This led to a scholarship at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied drawing, antiquities, and the landscape class of Oswald Achenbach.
After graduating in 1871, Bochmann established his own studios near the academy. His travels for study included trips to Holland, Belgium, and Estonia, with sketches from these journeys forming the basis for much of his later work. In 1877, he married Emilie Poensgen. He was a member of the Freie Vereinigung Düsseldorfer Künstler and served on the board of the Deutscher Künstlerbund.

Bochmann exhibited widely throughout Germany and Austria, notably at the Exposition Universelle in 1878.
