Life and Artistic Training
Born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, Henry Tenré was the son of the banker Ludovic Tenré. His upbringing in a bourgeois environment allowed him to frequent the collections of the museum located near the château shortly after his birth. He pursued his formal education at the École des beaux-arts de Paris, where he studied under several notable instructors. His training included landscape studies with Edmond Yon, a landscape painter of the Barbizon school, as well as portraiture instruction from Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre.
During a period of intense speculation on the Paris Bourse, Tenré, like many artists of his era, worked in various financial professions, including roles as a clerk and a stockbroker. He began exhibiting at the Salon des artistes français in 1883 and continued to show his work there throughout his life. His artistic achievements were recognized through several honors, including an honorable mention in 1891, a bronze medal at the 1900 Exposition universelle in Paris, and a silver medal in 1911. He was eventually named a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur.
