      A Life Shaped by Change

Johan Christiaan Alexander Willem Mulder, known to many as Jan Mulder, began his life in Maastricht. His early years were marked by a significant move to Amsterdam in 1906 after his father retired from business. While he initially felt a deep pull toward music, his path was redirected when his father discouraged him from pursuing it. Instead, he turned his attention to the visual arts, studying at vocational and art schools in Amsterdam and Haarlem between 1910 and 1915.

The years following his education were filled with varied occupations and global movement. He worked as a theater decorator, an interior designer, and an advertising artist. His travels took him to Cuba, Mexico, and the United States in 1921, followed by several years in France, living in Paris and Etaples-sur-Mer from 1925 to 1931. During this time, he was part of the Amsterdam avant-garde, connecting with figures such as Piet Mondriaan and Theo van Doesburg.

      Resistance and Relocation

The middle of his life was marked by profound hardship and political struggle. During the First World War, Mulder was mobilized from 1915 to 1918. Later, during the Second World War, his refusal to join the German Kultuurkamer led him to work within the underground artists' resistance. This period of defiance resulted in his internment in both Vught and Dachau.

A turning point arrived in 1946 when he received grants from the Dutch-Swedish Van Gogh Committee. These opportunities allowed him to move to Sweden, first settling in Strängnäs and later moving to Eskilstuna in 1958. He spent much of his remaining years there, finding a place where his work could grow away from traditional expectations.

      The Evolution of Vision

Mulder’s artistic output changed significantly as he moved through different stages of life and geography. His early work included portraits and various graphic works. As he settled into his Swedish period, his style shifted toward free abstraction. He sought to express an inner perception that did not rely on the visible world, creating large canvases and watercolours that functioned as a mystical witness to reality.

In his final years, even as his eyesight began to fail him in the early eighties, he found new ways to create. He discovered charcoal as a medium, using it to continue his creative expression until his death in 1988. His legacy remains present in major public art collections, representing a life of persistent adaptation.
