The Life and Career of Jerry Zeniuk
Born in Bardowick, Germany, to refugees from Ukraine, Jerry Zeniuk moved to Boulder in 1950. He earned his MFA from the University of Colorado in 1969, the same year he relocated to New York. His professional journey included a period in Hamburg from 1973 to 1974 and a year-long residency in Berlin from 1977 to 1978 supported by a DAAD scholarship. A Fellow for Painting for the National Endowment for the Arts in 1981, Zeniuk later became a member of the German Artists Association in 2003. He served as a professor of painting and graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich from 1993 to 2011 and has been a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts at the Alten Spinnerei since 2014.
Artistic Practice and Exhibitions
Zeniuk’s painting practice involves experimentation with techniques such as encaustic. His work has evolved from nearly monochromatic compositions to colorful pieces focused on the properties of color and pure visual perception. His 2012–2013 exhibition, Elementare Malerei, at the Staatsgalerie Moderne Kunst im Glaspalast Augsburg, showcased these various creative phases.
